The Art of Branding
in Hip-Hop

Athena Corral

In the modern music industry, being a talented artist alone no longer yields recognition and success. So what tools can today’s artists use to elevate themselves?

There are many, and on this edition of The Rizz, we focus on the utilization of language and fashion in hip-hop – highlighting how innovative vernacular, and sometimes odd fashion choices, can impact culture.

From the use of personal sound effects to the creation of words and acronyms, some of today’s top artists have made an indelible mark in music and beyond. By focusing on these examples, aspiring musicians and artists can appreciate the subtle nuances that help constitute mass appeal.

01: Distinctive Signatures

Whether it's a signature scream, a specific grunt, or a memorable catchphrase, several artists have effectively utilized sound effects to enhance their music and brand.

Let's take a closer look at a few examples:

01

Travis Scott - "It's Lit!" - This phrase, executed in a high-pitched reverberated style, has become synonymous with Travis Scott. It's a great example of how a simple sound effect can become a memorable and recognizable aspect of an artist's brand.

02

Meg Thee Stallion - "Ahhh!" - Meg Thee Stallion's signature scream has become a staple of her music and live performances. It's a unique and powerful way to express herself and encourage countless mimics from fans.

03

Rick Ross - "Grunt" - Rick Ross has become known for his deep and powerful grunts, which are often featured in his music, often serving as a precursor to his verses and bridges. This simple sound effect is unmistakably Rick Ross.

02: A Producers Dilemma, Solved

For years, producers have been the unsung heroes behind some of the biggest hits in music. While they were responsible for crafting the beats and soundscapes that drove the songs, they often went unrecognized by the general public. However, in recent years, this has changed, as producers have found new ways to make their presence known and build their brand recognition.

One of the ways producers have done this is by adding a "name stamp" or audio watermark to their beats. This allows fans to easily identify the producer behind a particular song and helps them build their reputation and brand.

Let's take a closer look at a few examples:

01

DJ Khaled - "We the Best!" - DJ Khaled is known for adding his signature "We the Best!" tag to the opening of his beats. Annoying? Yes. But its loud and bold delivery is simply unforgettable.

02

DJ Mustard - "Mustard on the Beat H*!" - A highly prolific producer, DJ Mustard has become synonymous with his signature tag, "Mustard on the Beat H*!" It's unforgettable, and always seems to come in at exactly the right time.

03

Mike Will - "Mike Will Made It" - Mike Will's tag, "Mike Will Made It," has become a recognizable aspect of his beats. Delivered in a soothing voice, this subtle approach has helped earn this producer worldwide recognition.

By understanding the importance of these techniques, aspiring producers can use them to enhance their careers and make a lasting impact on the industry.

03: The Power of Words

The use of language is a powerful tool in the world of hip hop and music in general. It's not just about the lyrics and the rhythm, but also about the words, phrases, and acronyms that artists create to make their brand unique. These terms can become part of the cultural lexicon and help artists transcend hip-hop itself.

Let's get into it:

01

Snoop Dogg - "Shizzle" - Snoop Dogg is known for adding his own unique flair to the world of hip hop. He's created his own words and phrases, including "shizzle," which has been adopted by nearly everyone's personal lexicon.

02

Drake - "YOLO" - Drake is known for his unique use of language, and his creation of the acronym "YOLO" is a prime example of this. YOLO, which stands for "you only live once," has become a cultural touchstone and a symbol of living life to the fullest.

03

Beyonce - "Bootylicious" - Beyonce is one of the biggest names in music, and she's known for her catchy, memorable lyrics. One of her most famous creations is the term "bootylicious," which has become a staple of pop culture.

04

Cash Money - "Bling" - Cash Money is a legendary hip hop label, and they've created their own language to define their brand. One of the most recognizable terms they've created is "bling," which has become synonymous with the flashy, lavish lifestyle that's often associated with hip-hop

05

LL Cool J - "GOAT" - Although the acronym has only recently become popular, LL Cool J is often credited for inventing it. "GOAT," which stands for "greatest of all time," is now an official word in the Merriam Webster dictionary.

04: How Fashion Intertwines

From oversized clothing to designer collaborations, hip-hop culture has always had a serious love affair with fashion. Let’s highlight some of the most legendary fashion icons in the game and how they used their personal style to elevate their brand.

01

Flava Flav - The Clock Necklace - Flava Flav is considered a pioneer in the world of hip-hop fashion. He is best known for wearing a large clock around his neck, which quickly became his trademark. This bold piece of jewellery made him instantly recognizable to fans.

02

He was often seen wearing high-end designer pieces and made a name for himself as a style icon in the hip hop community. 03

Kanye West - The Polo Trend - Kanye West is a master of making fashion statements. He made Polo shirts popular in the hip hop community and even wrote a memorable line about it on one of his stints on Russell Simmons’ Def Poetry Jam: "Ralph Lauren was borin’ before I wore 'em."
